Documentary photographer Mujgan Arpat's exhibition titled 'CONFRONTATIONS: The other side of Firat' will open at Tutun Deposu on January 22, 2010. Arpat's previous exhibition titled 'The Gaior Neighborhood' was exhibited in Istanbul, Diyarbakir and Canakkale.
Since the other side of the Firat river appeared in the Turkish media only within the context of martyr funerals and terrorist acts of the PKK, the experiences of the people there remained distant for those here, says Arpat. As a result, two opposite perceptions with huge gaps in between emerged on the two different sides of Firat. Now, it is impossible to talk about peace or the Kurdish Initiative before we eliminate this difference.
'CONFRONTATIONS: The other side of Firat' presents sequences from the experiences of the other side, in order to take a closer look at the costs of war and the struggle for peace.
The income of the exhibition catalogue will be donated to the Human Rights Association in Turkey.
The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday between 11 a.m and 7 p.m.
MUJGAN ARPAT lived in Berlin until 2000 and worked for projects against racism and violence against women. She was the vice president of International Human Rights Association.
She has been living in Turkey since 2000 and is working as a correspondent for a German Television.
Arpat's photographs have been published in various journals, newspapers and the internet sites of different media institutions in Germany. Her photographs were used on the covers of the books Multikulti Irrtum (Multi-Culti Fallacy) and Islam braucht eine sexuelle Revolution (Islam Needs a Sexual Revolution).
